Software Testing Industry has evolved a lot since a decade. There has been many changes since late 90's and currently the complete scenario and importance of software testing has been changed. Earlier testing used to mean to just test the applications for its functionality and done. This used to be treated as a very simple and layman job. No domain or Technical skills were required to perform the software testing.
But now, the complete end-to-end process is being performed in testing, starting from the initial requirement reviews till the testing of the final packaging of the software. The testers with domain and technical skills are very much in demand. They are getting paid more than our very favorite developers. Testers with niche skills are climbing the ladder faster than the mere developers.
In some specific domains, the testers are getting more onsite exposure than developers. For the positions like Business Analyst (BA), testers are preferred over developers due to their indepth domain knowledge and understanding of the types of real-life scenarios due to their testing background.
Finally, the testers are getting their share of pie. The software testing is no more an optional job but a full fledged planned career ladder.
